Kind of reminds me of something that happened to me. I lost my left foot in WW II, but got over it well, what with a fine wooden leg that Uncle Sam gave me.
When Ruth and i got married, we bought a nice bungalow out in what then was country, about 12 miles from town, and settled in. 2 weeks later, this area had a heavy snow, and the roads were all but impassible. I barely made it home Friday night from work!
Saturday morning, i heard noises outside, so i put on my Artics and coat and went out to see.
there was a bunch of neighbors, digging thru the drifts to open the road! I asked why, and they told me they had to get a young feller out to the main road, to a snow plow that could carry him out to the Drs. office, about 4 miles away.
So, i went and got a shovel and went out to help. One guy had come out in dress shoes, and was complaining of cold feet! Well-duh--
So i sat down, took off the boot on the wood foot side, and told him to put it on, and when that foot warmed up, to switch it to the other foot! So thats what he did, and he helped finish the job.
Fast forward about 30 years: I met him one day in a local bar, and he told me he remembered that day of snow shovelling. "But, he said, There was one thing about that day, and i still wonder about the fact that you loaned me one boot, and i switched it once in a while--but-you never did that! Why?"
I swung my wooden leg up, knocked on it real hard, then set it back down on the floor!
He turned his head and said:" I had to ask! thats been bugging me all these years!"
We had a good laugh over it, and he bought me a beer!
Today, i visited a farmer friend, who fell off a tall ladder, and the injury took his left leg off below the knee, just like mine!
By the time i left--he had perked up and was really looking forward to getting his new arificial leg, so he could get back to farming!

Today's Featured Article - A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner. ...
