TJ,

Your questions brought to mind a few that I had re farm plates, so I went to the MN vehicle website. Unfortunately the real state website has not been updated for about 3 years (Gov Pawlenty "no new tax" pledges??). So the most recent data for the cost of each plate is 2006.

I know there have been some changes for 2009, as my Y plated 02 F350 is now upgraded to a 10,000 lb weight class from what was always 9,000 lbs.

You have stated that your F350 is an "old" truck. According to the web site data, the lowest cost catagory is for 98 or older. Especially with something newer, the Y (commercial) plate is much more costly than the T (farm truck) plate.

This may be of value to you, don't know if it still works... I have a 93 E350 van that originally had Y plates, but the renewal cost of Y plates never gets below about $100. I had it reclassified as a passenger car plate (then GVW below 9,000). The fees came down to the $40 area. This is the same deal that every F250 fits into, so they almost always have passenger car plates. But if your truck is a dually, I don't think this works.

The sales tax for farm use is an absolute nightmare of stupid rules. If I buy tractor tires and inner tubes, pay the 6.5+%. If I buy fencing for horses or cattle or tarps to cover harvested crop, pay the full sales tax. If I buy fencing to keep elk in pasture, pay NO tax, If I buy fencing to keep deer or elk out of a vegetable or pumpkin field, then pay full tax. If I buy a new tractor with new tires, there is NO tax. If I buy building materials to repair or build a barn, pay the full tax. And then many merchants do not know the rules for farm use, so they demand tax on everything, I have had some fights about that. Farmers are not issued tax exemption #s in this state, so it is a nightmare for the merchants to do their job correctly.

I think you'll be stuck paying the sales tax on the truck, but I also think it is quite unfair. The state collects tax on the full purchase price everytime the vehicle is sold (unless there was a trade-in at a dealer).

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most ... [Read Article]
