I have a middle buster (like a subsoiler with a shovel head) and have used it with a 16" shovel head to trench a little. I plan to use it for a garden area soon, so I'll find out how helpful it is. I have a 22hp (?) '50 Ford N that I use, and even with the ground damp, I had to make several passes on my trench. I got about 12" deep or so. Note: I bulldozed a 1/2 area on my prop last summer, and I'm sure I aggravated the topsoil and everything else! The local farm supply store recommended I add calcium and phosorous prior to planting clover and grass. (an organic approach) It's worked just fine. I suggest you check out your local farm supply store and ask them what is helpful for soils in your area. I also understand that using steer manure can add lots of other stuff that you don't want to add to your garden. Again, check with your farm supply store.
