It was a hard decision to leave the family farm after we quit milking cows, but I moved west(IA). I grew up on a dairy in MA. I just could not stand the BS of all the stuck up snobs who thought they could control everything, and never gave a single thought to the people who were there first and built the towns they live in..( I also had other issues at hand, but thats a whole nother story). I'm sure its only a matter of time before it heads this way, but generally if you live in the country you can do what you want here.
To answer your question I really don't know what you can do besides put up a good "fight". That is exactly the type of things that I could never understand, unless maybe you are dumping oil in the ground or otherwise doing harm to someone/something, what you do with your place and how it looks should be up to you. Not all of us can have new equipment all painted and mowed under....Sorry for the rant, just my 2 cents....Jim
