sorry it has taken so long to reply; i finally got a free weekend to work on "henry" (ford). I finally replaced the temp guage with a generic one from O'reilly auto parts. I tested it in a pot of boiling water to ensure that it wasn't defective. it works fine; i lowered the level of the radiator. the first time after, it boiled over once. i let it cool down and rechecked the coolant level; it was low. I topped it off again and took it out once more. I observed the temp exceed 230 and then suddenly drop like a rock down to 150. The oem guage just was more of an indicator.(cool,normal,hot). i have since tried it 2 days in a row; it does not boil over, and the coolant level seems to be staying put. the only thing that is odd is that starting from cold it usually heats up in excess of 230 before the thermostat opens; then it will drop to 150, go back up to 190 or so, and then occasionally back up to 230 or so. the thermostat is a new one from yesterdays tractor, but i think it is a p.o.s too. things are looking better for the old ford; maybe there is a reason that the original guage was not graduated in degrees!? thanks again for your input
