First not all oils are created equally, both conventional & synthetic. For example reg. Castrol GTX tested better than Mobil1 in volatility & 4-ball wear tests. AMSOIL products almost always test better than all other brands. They were the first to have an API approved synthetic oil (NOT mobil1) in 1973. A key advantage of synthetics is their ability to handle contaminates like acids. This is how they are able to go longer between changes. Also, the better synthetics made from pure stocks have fewer impurities to cause sludge and thicken in cold temperatures therefore easier cold weather cranking. Synthetics are great for cold weather chore tractors and equipment.
