Mag or distributor?
If it's a mag, the impulse should snap just as the first mark lines up with the stationary pointer.
If it's a distributor, ground the coil high-tension lead for safety. Connect a non-powered test light to the primary terminal on the distributor. Turn on the ignition switch.
SLOWLY turn the crankshaft to bring the first mark into alignment. Just as the marks align, the test light should LIGHT, indicating the points have just begun to open. This is when a distributor makes a spark.
