While James had used his dad"s old McCormick (I think) and the Ford 2810, when we got our place in Dallas in "91, we needed a tractor. My dad had passed in "89 and we drove James" 1965 heavy half ton Chevy p/u and a 16 ft flat bed to Gosport, Indiana (1800+ miles) to get my dad"s JD 48A.
That old tractor got us started in vintage tractors. They are more affordable than new and we like them. We find a one in good running condition, do what little fixing up they may need, and use them on the farm in e. Tx.
Now, there is a sea of green at the shop and shed. We have 3 JD 70"s (1 diesel with pony motor, 2 gas), 3 A"s, 3 B"s, an M and an MT. We just added the MT last week. I think we are going to have to stop buying tractors or build another shed. Even though we squeeze "em in nose to nose, we are out of room.
I used my dad"s 48A, which is my primary tractor, this last w/e to spray the hayfield. The big boys (70"s) are used for harder work - balers, 350 & 39 mowers, the M has a finishing mower which we use around the house, shop and sheds, the B"s pull the hay rakes and sometimes a #5 mower.
We enjoy them and will continue to use them on our farm as long as we are able.
Our favorite close to a day on the farm is to crank up which ever two we want and take a leisurely drive around the farm. Fantastic end to a day working our place. God is good.
