Not so stupid man, This is according to a mobile equipment seminar presented by Delco division of General Motors at the University of Arizona several years ago. "75% of all starting and charging circuit problems are due to loose and or dirty connections." Delco came up with this number after investigating large fleets of mobil equipment such as taxi cab fleets, trucking fleets, the U.S. military, and others. I grew up on a farm in west centrial Indiana and am now a mechanical maintenance general superintendent in a very large hard rock mine in Indonesia. Over-all I have been in this business over 30 years. I can say without reservation that the number of 75% is conservative. Over the years I have seen countless batteries, alternators, and starters replaced. I have made it mandatory to test each of these components before submitting them to the junk pile or the rebuild shop. The number of good components found after testing has ( before retraining the mechanics ) consistently exceeded 75%. I like most other maintenance managers that come up from sweeping the shop floors find it hard ( read embarrased ) to admit this. But belive me its true. I guess the lesson here is check the connections and assure they are clean and tight first. Regards Earl
