The whole point of having a tractor is to go slow. The idea isn't to get from one point to another, but rather to do work, usually by pulling something. Most field work is done at 3-5 mph, rarely more than 10mph, usually at full throttle. You can pull a house with a lawnmower engine, if you're geared low enough (and have the traction!). Some tractors even have transmissions with super-low gearing for tasks like roto-tilling, snow-blowing, transplanting, and orchard spraying. People started racing cars because their job is to get from one place to another faster, to see who was the best at it. So, people slow-race tractors to see who's best at that. It's just another way to be around the machines we love to work on.
