L325 skid steer loader problem

I own a 1979 L325 New Holland skid steer loader with a Kohler K582S engine, that has been driving us NUTS! For the past year this thing has been vaporlocking on us. We've tried asbestos heat shields (Dont tell the EPA or OSHA!), alum foil and fiberglass insulation fuel line shields, replaced the fuel pump, fuel lines (rubber), fuel filter, added a electric fan, even tried running it on an external fuel tank, which helped, but did not cure the problem. All with the same result....after it runs an hour or 2 ( depending on ambient temp) it starves for fuel. This is very visible with a clear plastic fuel filter. When the problem occurs, there is a very small amount of fuel in the filter, which fluctuates. Does anyone PLEASE have an answer?? Dad wants to try an electric fuel pump, but I'm of a mind that it should work as designed (but then I have seen engineers do some pretty stupid things).
