All: I throw my 2cents in with Mike and Dean along with the fact that many light aircraft also use updraft. I have been told many times over the last 40 years that fire was a big consern and a lower mounted updraft can help save the day in an aircraft. I had an aircraft engine carb catch fire about 20 years ago due to fault in the carb. I was lucky to get it out by going to full power and shutting off the gas line from the tank. The spilled gas ran off the colder lower parts of the engine. I'd have to guess that early tractor engineers considered the carb\gas fire as a problem and leaned toward the updraft along with other mentioned items..There is nothing as exciting as a gas\carb fire, I assure you. It gets your attention real fast and anything to prevent it spreding is well worth having.......harvey
