You don't say whether the mystery M-F has a cab but I assume not. What you describe sounds amazingly like my early 70's vintage M-F 50A, a TLB (tractor-loader-backhoe). In other words, not a farm tractor at all. Are you sure you gave the serial number correctly? If it is a 50A I believe there must be 6 digits after the 9A (beginning with either a 1 or 2). The model was originally designated (at least on my 50A) by a decal on the rear portion of the right frame for the front bucket (which also serves as the hydraulic fluid reservoir) just below the pivot attachment for the front boom. One hint is whether the M-F logo has red or yellow (red for farm, yellow for industrial). If you give a few more details (say the various transmission shift levers, the steering system, type of seat, any details about the hydraulic system) I would be able to confirm or refute my proposal. The 50A came with a manual shuttle shift lever (for forward-reverse) to the left and just below the steering wheel. I believe it was also available with instant reverse, I know the 50C was. The 50A has both an accelerator pedal and a pull knob manual throttle. The steering is hydrostatic, with no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front end. Certainly the 50A (or its successor the 50C, which has a cab) would not readily be mistaken for a farm tractor. It has some massive structural elements for what is really only a small to medium tractor. I suppose you could remove the backhoe on the 50A (not easily but it could be done) and hook up a PTO or spline drive at the back of the differential housing to make it somewhat useable as a farm tractor. Maybe that is what happened to yours. Dave

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
