My mom was a secretary, and insisted I take typing in HS. Manual typewriters, quirky teacher- "Sit up straight, feet flat on the floor, eyes on copy, ready, TYPE!" We had to do at least one "timed writing" at 50 words per minute to get an A, as well as at least one perfect letter, without errors. I hit 50 on the last opportunity of the course, and turned in a perfect letter on the last day.
Make sure your kids learn to type (I think mine taught themselves- don't remember if there was a computer course or something, but they could all touch type "really fast" by the time they got out of grade school). Pretty much essential in today's computer workplace.
