I'm sure he's just trying to make people realize they're asking way too much for what they have. I have been car shopping for a good month now and I have seen some of those said cars.
One was a '03 Passat I was looking at- the guy wanted $9000 for it, but it had 85,000 miles on it and was in need of a new timing belt (says to change at 80,000). It was a decent car and he kept it clean, but was asking too much. I looked it up on both Edmunds and KBB.com, and they both said $6500-7000 if it's in good shape. Subtract some for needing the timeing belt and other work associated with it, I offered him $6,000, explained what it needed and what I found wrong, and basically said take it or leave it.
Of course he declined. This was 3-4 weeks ago and it's still sitting for sale. He's been trying to sell it for probably 2-3 months now, and I noticed he just moved it to a buddies house that's a little closer to me, with more traffic. I'm gonna watch and see how much longer it takes him.
He's selling because he paid too much for it a year ago, he went back to school (younger guy) and he can't afford the payments anymore. He bought something cheaper now (with worse mileage) and needs to unload that car so he can pay for his new one. Something just seemed fishy so I don't feel bad for what I offered or that I simply walked away. I know it got to him though.
I'm now looking at an 03 Jetta, 70,000 miles and in pretty good shape. The asking price is less than blue book ($8,000), I still have some wiggle room. I'm getting a pre-buy inspection done on Monday, and after that I'll probably buy it unless something major shows up. I have my financing all lined up, and I'm ready to buy now. I know what I want and this car has almost everything, except the color. I can deal with that.
