CJ,
The first IH utility is the 300U made in 1955 and 56. From your question, I suspect you have either a 300U or a 350U. The fan belt is a wide belt and it does not go to the generator, but only from the Crankshaft pulley to the water pump/fan pulley. This is the same system used on the Farmall H, the engine is from the same engine family as the H.
To change the belt is a challenge, it has a 1/4" (?) set screw tightened into a groove in the water pump pulley. That set screw must be backed out and then the front half of that same pulley can be rotated on fine threads to increase the space between front and back half of that pulley. Caution: Use plenty of penetrating oil and patience in trying the above proceedure. On my 300U, I broke the casting that the set screw threads into. 180 degrees from the set screw is a cast boss that you can tap on with hammer and punch to get the pulley half to move on the threads. I need to change the belt on mine too, but have delayed as long as possible.
Once you have enough slack in the belt, you move it forward off the crankshaft pulley (hopefully you do not have a front mount hydraulic pump), lift the belt up and work it over each of the fan blades, one at a time. I can't remember whether the generator belt is closer to the fan or closer to the block. There is 2 pulleys on the water pump, the narrow pulley is for the generator belt. If the wide belt slips, then the generator/alternator turns too slow to charge the battery (but it may look like it is turning).

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
