When I retired 25 years ago I signed up with a Tricare Prime program called Johns Hopkins Uniform Services Family Health Plan (USFHP). Co-pays were $12 and Rx's were $3 or $9. I also took out a secondary policy through a retired military organization. but never had to use it.
When I hit 65 I found out I could stay in the program and did not have to take TFL. I signed up for Medicare Part B and the annual enrollment fees and co-pays for USFHP stopped. I only pay the monthly Part B cost and Rx's - $3 or #9. USFHP is the primary payer. My insurance card says "Do not bill Medicare". Since then I've had 3 cancer operations and never paid a dime. One of them involved over 30 hours of surgery.
USFHP is available in the greater Baltimore area. I would think similar programs are available elsewhere around the country. For folks that haven't yet hit 65 check with Tricare and do some research. I couldn't be happier with what I have.
