I think of the final drive as being inside the transmission, not a chain that couples the engine to the transmission. That being said, those rear ends can still handle a whole lot of power and not get tore up.
I've never heard of anybody complaining about a transmission in one of those getting tore up under stock HP, and not too many under more than stock either.
