Check over on the MF forum and search 2775 see what comes up. Some of the post will confirm the trans problems and tell you what to look for.
This is what I see around here…and it could be different where you are. 5 series TW’s with 6 – 10,000 hrs generally fall in the $10k - $20k bracket, depending on 2wd / MFWD, series 1 or 11 (black stripe, flat top cab) etc. Well maintained they should be good for 10 – 15,000 hrs, and there are lots of examples around to back this up.
2775’s I’m really not sure how many hours they are good for, but I would suspect less than the TW. Used parts may be harder to find than the Ford, and that 24sp trans did have a bad rep. I’m not sure if there were other trans options on the 2775. Around here they don’t make much, mainly falling in the $4k - $8k bracket, and the few that I’ve seen seem to have lower hours….3 – 4000 hrs!! The price they command really does indicate that people view them as a disposable tractor. Buy one with this in mind. Use it till it breaks then throw it away. You may be lucky and get years of trouble free use. A cheap TW should also be view the same way.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
