Just so you know - not all PC's have the recovery partition built-in - and most that do will reformat your hard drive first, erasing any of the files you had on it.
If you truly meant the DOS recovery console, not the partition - F8 on boot-up should get you in to it - but there is no practical chance of repairing your original Windows installation, if you had that many infected files...
The typical Windows XP install has from 10,000 to 25,000 files to operate successfully and many viruses directly infect the Windows system area, which causes the symptoms you are seeing....
