Alberta: Lightening does some very strange things and to find SOLID protection is not cheap. Your friends $74-100 isn't too far off but it isn't a total 100percent protection. The internal power supply in your PC has a safety circuit built-in that helps. It all depends how safe you want to feel? I shut off both computer and the $20 power strip when I know there will be lightening...and I also unplug the phone cord going into the modem. Many forget the modem and incomming phone lines. In Canada I would think turning it off during the summer thunder storms will help 99 percent of the time. If ya want more, it will cost. I have a background in this sort of thing and its not easy to fool mother nature all of the time. I suggest you UNPLUG modem phone line and turn off both power strip and computer. Do your hard drive backups and.. Good luck. harvey.
