I'd say that surge protectors are not a great answer fro computer protection. For one thing, most of them use MOV's which WEAR OUT! As they absorb spikes, they get worse and worse at doing so. UPS's are getting cheap enough that I'd say just drop $100-200 for a basic ups for your computer system. The better ones will tell your system to do a gracefull shutdown if the line fails. These are excellent protection because they regenerate ac from a battery. The ac line just charges the battery and is isolated. Regarding phone lines, a phone line surge protector is the thing. I use one, but cannot attest to its effectiveness. Regarding household appliances- I'd love to get a house-wide protector as someone else suggested.
