Olds and Caddie got ohv v8s in 1949, after much development time. It was a speed demon. In 1953, the small block chevy was prepared for the pentagon as a high speed disposable motor. It showed up in sept 54 in the 55 cars with/wo an oil filter as a 265. Hyd lifters- except in the high perf editions. the small block was an excellent motor in all cases, very durable. Pontiac/Buick came out with their own ohv v8s, and some were used in GMC trucks sucessfully for a short time. All these GM motors were good. In some cases, the valve seats and piston rings were not good enuf for trucks. The 55 corvette was able to defeat cars at 6 times the price. The Ford Y block was also very sucessful.

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
