Compression test is a good idea. Get the screw in compression tester. Pull all the plugs, open the throttle wide and turn it over 4-5 times to get a reading...repeat on the others. If you have a low compression on one or more cylinders, do a wet test. A wet test is taking a table spoon full of motor oil, pour it into the cylinder to be tested and retest, if the compression comes up, it's rings, if it doesn't it's valves. What happens is that the oil momentarily seals the rings and it raises the compression. The sweet smell white smoke is your antifreeze getting into the combustion area...cylinders, only way for it to get there is a blown head gasket or a cracked head. Now, back to the compression test...I typed it but....you don't have a starter motor and you need it to do the test. The engine has to spin over a bunch of times and the hand crank just isn't going to do it.
