We always subsoiled in the fall when the ground was dry and hard. You need to get down under the hard pan, and the susoiler feet/wings will shatter the pan by lifting and fracturing. Our hard pan was 10"-14"... just below plough depth. We subsoiled once every four years. Mole ploughing was done in the spring, deeper than the subsoiler, to form moles drains above the tile. The mole would not bust the hard pan like a subsoiler. Chris
