Remember the Isreali ship in New York harbor that had .50 caliber machine guns and some other automatic weapons for crew? Guns were dismounted coming into harbor- boat got involved in civil payment dispute and was held for court inspection, weapons found, nasty diplomatic situation possible. Ship was released after payment of late bills, weapons returned. Isreali government told court the ship had a reserve navy status and reservist crews had right to their weapons, crew served weapons were also reserve and assigned to ship- US/New York city laws didn't apply to weapons not being trafficed and needed for protection- similar to embassy weapons for gaurds- so drop the weapons charges or US could provide military escort and New York City police could protect cargo at docks- New York city would be liable for any missing cargo or crews hurt. Russian cargo ships in Canada also noted to have automatic weapons at times. Old court cases still available for precedents- basicly if weapons are NOT being smuggled in to country and are secured before docking -unless needed for protection in dock and kept on ship with local law notified- the old laws that allowed armed merchant vessls is still in affect for admiralty courts. Depends sort of on ship country of registry and size, how much flag country wants to dispute weapons rights- Isreal as noted in Californis airport counter shooting case couple years back does believe in right to defend, not dependant on host country protective services.
