As a Vet I'd say it's been handled right. Half of our casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan are due to some Jr grade officer going John Wayne without full intel.
Nothing like letting them float around in the sun for a couple of days to soften them up. So now you have an uninjured captain recovered, 3 dead pirates, one captured and the life boat recovered. If they had forced the issue up front the pirates would have probably killed the captain before even returning fire to defend themselves. This is a successful case of "Mission Accomplished."
Once again the US Forces deliver. Kinda tired of being the postman for the world. Now if some of these other countries will either lead or get out of the way then Operation Pirate Cleanse can begin.
