How is it going to make his clutch last any longer? All he has to do now is NOT use 5th-overdrive. If he gets on a hill somewhere and feels 1st gear isn't low enough to get started, all he has to do is stick it into low range.
No truck does everything best. But, for a light-duty F150 that is more of a driver than a tower, putting in 4.10s makes no sense to me, amd I don't see where it will make anything last any longer. If it were 2WD with no low-range option, it would be a different situation.
I've got a Chevy 1/2 ton K10 with a four-speed manual OD and 3.08 axles, and do fine with it for light towing. But, using low range to get started on hills is a must. Just don't use OD and I've only got three gears to use when towing. His Ford will still have four when not using OD.
