My great-grandfather was Alva Centennial Warner (born in 1876, thus the middle name). He never got a nickname and hated the name Alva. The only unkind word he ever spoke about his parents had to do with his name.
So one of his daughters, my grandmother, names her second son (my uncle) Alva. Well, Poppy wasn't havin' anything to do with that, refused to ever call a child by that name, and allowed that his grandson looked like a Jake. And Jake he became. Everybody in town knew Jake, but not until he died did they ever know that his name was Alva. A few of them might have heard it when his name was called at their high school graduation, but had forgotten.
