"I will try to get to the shoulder if there is one".
Have you ever considered driving on the shoulder in the first place? I was born and raised on a farm, I farmed myself at one time, and I still live on the family farm. And one of my pet peeves is farmers who drive tractors and combines right down the middle of the road, even on hills, apparently completely oblivious to the fact that there just might be someone else who has a legal right to be using the road at the same time they are.
Compounding the problem is the fact that the gravel road past our farm is a road the local John Deere dealer uses to shuttle machinery between two lots. It's a bit unnerving to crest a hill, even at a reasonable speed, and confront head-on a combine with a 24' header covering the entire road. In a fit of sensibility once, I suggested they might want to run a pickup with a rotating beacon ahead of the combine. I was told, more or less, that they're God-almighty JOHN DEERE and they don't need us mere mortals to try to tell them how to run their operation.
I'm looking for the same thing. They won't wake up until they kill someone.
My rant for the day, and my condolences to the family of the mail carrier who was killed.
