repost of halftrack/tire chain question

Just wondering if anyone has used an old set of half-tracks and shortened them to use instead of tire-chains? Is it worth it? Also wondering about adapting these tracks to my Ford 1500. The loader frame makes it seem unlikely that I could put the idler wheels in the usual location. Any thoughts on put the idler wheels out the back end? Thanks Kim Hartshorn
