Was always a Chevy guy, but had respect for them Chrysler Hemis, and the design of the 429 nearly Hemi Super Cobra Jet head. Things like that. Nobody had it perfect. That 427 SOCH Ford had a nice design with those six bolt main caps, although the block was kind of heavy since it enveloped the caps.
Don't get me going, I love it. But since you asked, off the show room floor, the L-88 Vette with second generation open chamber heads, or better yet third generation open chamber heads with D-shaped exhaust ports was a nice starting point. I was more partial to the shorter 3.76" stroke of the 427 than I was the 4" stroke of the 454. More reliable, higher RPMs, and could twist far more out of a 427 because of the shorter stroke. But then again, that '70 LS-6 454 was rated at just above CID with HP at 460 off the show room floor although it had a lot more than advertised. Pound for pound though, couldn't squeeze out of an LS-6 what could an L-88. Mmm, the good old days.
