I don't know about the government actually controlling the industry (they'd mess it up worse than it already is) but if you have a credit card, no matter how smart you, the industry as it is now will bend you over you in a heart beat. I just finished reading an article in USA Today about them (the card companies) now raising interest rates on people that have a balance but pay on time for no reason other than trying to cover their "asets". Their reasoning is that with the economy being bad "everyone" is now at a higher risk and as such should be charged a higher interest rate whether there is any other real reason (such as late payments, etc) or not. Unfortunately in their greed they fail to see that by them taking more of hard working peoples money to line their own pockets they wind up creating a worse economy and wind up making the people who weren't at risk be at risk by taking more of their money. The article said that there are more cards now in default or having late payments being made on them than ever before because of this practice. I don't believe the government needs to control the industry but I believe the industry needs some guidelines, possibly in the way of federal laws, that they have to follow to keep them from doing people they way they are doing.
