Whether or not you agree with global warming, there is significant evidence--theoretical, statistical and anecdotal--that supports it. The same cannot be said of the gadgets sold by the efficiency scammers. Anecdotal evidence, yes. Statistical and theoretical, none.
I would flip the comparison around the other way: People will almost always believe what sounds to be in their own self-interest. That's why the Nigerian scammers rake in millions. People want to believe that a $100 device will save them thousands in fuel costs. They also want to believe that we'll always have plenty of cheap fuel and that we won't have to change our habits to stop fouling the earth. That's not science, that's self-delusion.
