The 4500's engine which he is talking about was designed to run on CC or CD spec oil, not CJ-4. As far as I'm concerned it will run well enough on any of them. The use of low sulfur fuel has no bearing on what oil you use in an old engine.
The ONLY purpose of this new spec oil is for NEW engines which have Tier III emission systems, regeneration systems and particulate filters installed. These systems are designed to run on ULSD and will plug if you use high sulfur or low sulfur diesel rather than ULSD... and the change in the oil was due to the ZDDP additive (zinc) in the older spec oil. ZDDP will cause problems with the emission systems on these engines, thus it had to be removed from the oil... thus you have a new spec oil which is free of, or has severly reduced amounts of ZDDP.
Some would actually argue that this lack of ZDDP is causing the failure of flat tappet cams in older engines... though I'm not convinced of that. It seems hard to find an older spec oil out there today, so I tend to think the newer stuff is intended for use in older engines. Mabey some day I'll look differently on it....

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
