Bill, you sure can use a timing light on your A. If you have an adjustable degree timing light Just dial in 25* & hook it to # 1 (L/H) spark plug wire & run it at fast idle. The dot on the flywheel hub should line up with the mark on the flywheel cover (bottom center). If you don't have an adjustable dregree timing light then you will have to pull the flywheel cover, then rig up a simple strap to hold the starter rod & spring so it can be started (you will see why when you pull the flywheel cover), then measure the outside circumference of the flywheel in inches (not the starter teeth), then devide by 360,(that will give you degrees per inch) then multiply that number (will be under an inch) by 25 (advance degrees), (that number will be the 25* advance converted to inches at the diameter of the flywheel) then measure that amount in the advanced direction from the impulse mark on the flywheel & put a paint mark, then start the tractor & run at fast idle with the timing light hooked to #1 (L/H) cyl. If timing is correct the light will flash when the paint mark lines up with the mark on the case (cover), it should be directly behind the flywheel at crankshaft height. If you or any body has a question on this either e-mail or post a followup.
