I haven't seen anything for sale new that was just a VCR, but there are lots of VCR-DVD combinations available. I have seen Sonys for sale for under $100, and off brands for as little as $40.
I don't know how the quality of the combinations is, but I would hope they would work for awhile. It's kind of a far cry from the early VCRs that cost hundreds of dollars. My first Beta machine cost about $850 in 1977, and that was supposed to be wholesale. It still works, but I haven't seen a Beta tape for sale for many years. It is getting a bit hard to find VHS blank tapes for a cheap price, so when I find them for about $1 each, I stock up.
Although the DVD format is lots more popular now, I don't think that the VHS format is dead. It is just too handy for many things. I hope they continue to support VHS. Good luck!
