MY LATEST PROJECT TRACTOR - CASE 420B- PICTURE INCLUDED

I bought the 420B as a tractor/loader/backhoe about 2 years ago. It had been cannibalized with no sheetmetal, carb, tank, power steering pump, brake pods, or brake linkage, no running boards, or outriggers for the backhoe. The engine was seized, steering column and governor were rusted immovable. The piston rings were corroded so badly in the cylinder bores that it took several hours to get the pistons out, and then, it took about 45 minutes per piston to break the rings out of the pistons.

I got the engine rebuilt and changed all the fluids. The CASE-O-matic worked flawlessly after getting the engine rebuilt and running.

I found the hood nose, power steering pump, and brake system from a CASE 530, the hood came from a 411B, the fuel tank is from a 600B, the grille came from a 310 dozer (that had to be narrowed), the carb and front wheels came from a John Deere, and the alternator is a GM 12V. When the loader and backhoe were removed, this left the tractor "bare back" without a PTO or 3 point(Eagle Hitch) hitch. I found a salvage CASE 600B and bought the bellhousing rearward of it. The live PTO and Eagle hitch went on my 420B, but it all had to be modified.

The PTO shaft had to be shortened 3" to fit my tractor (which I did on my lathe and was within .002" TIR). The 3 point hitch rockshaft housing had to be put on a fabricated riser in order to miss the bull gears in my 420's differential.

Nearly everything that went onto this tractor had to be modified to fit! The brakes are from a 530. I had to mill flats on the housings to fit onto my tractor.

I eliminated the power steering reservoir by running the supply and return hoses to the CASE-O-matic reservoir (I'm using Dexron III/Mercon ATF in it). I drilled through some bosses on the side of the torque tube that were formerly 5/8"-11 threads and retapped them with 3/8" NPT pipe threads for fittings. This seems to work very nicely, and the engine area is less cluttered.

It's now painted with Flambeau Red and Desert Sunset instead of Construction Yellow along with new decals being added.

It still needs one rear tire, but otherwise, I need to sell it for my next project. I've mounted the backhoe from it onto a bigger tractor, and need some project money to get that tractor in usable shape.
