I would say that the saying refers to the flower. It starts out white then when it's fertilized it turns pinkish red, then dies off. This takes about 2 to 3 days. The cotton boll is the developed overy of the flower. A cotton gin pulls the lint from the seed. The word gin is short for engine. In acient times any mechanical device was called an engine. Can't help you with blue bonnet or wing.
