How good were the paint jobs/paint on older tractors ?????

Often wondered just how good a quality of paint they used on tractors, say in the 1940's? Was it automotive quality with hardeners, etc? Or was it just machinery enamel? Was there any priming done or just paint over the bare metal? I know that my Cockshutt 30 wasn't even painted under the hood etc.
