Briggs engines run a vacuum in the crancase to help prevent oil leaks or oil past the rings. The crancase breather has a check valve in it which lets air out of the crankcase on the piston down stroke, and prevents any air entering the crankcase on the piston up stroke. If the breather assy has failed or the engine has an air leak like a loose dipstick tube or o ring or a bad gasket on the dipstick They will use a lot of oil. Check this out first and the breather assy only cost a few $$ so might be worth a try.
