I think Memorial day even goes a step further than honoring the war dead and all deceased veterans. Even though the "official" holiday is to honor the deceased vets, most of us also decorate the all the graves of our dearly departed. I spent a lot of time at cemeteries this last week trimming, edging, cleaning bird crap off of markers, and putting out flowers. My mother and grandmothers weren't in the service but they were honored as well.
