Looks like you learned a lesson I learned a long time ago. I always pay attention to my surroundings, especially in a parking lot. I watch those around me, listen for someone behind, pay attention to any vehicles that may be "shadowing" me - especially vans, do not walk close to parked vehicles, and have my keys out and ready before I get to my truck. That"s just the way it is.
On a different note, statistics have proven that states which allow citizens a permit to carry a weapon have lower crime rates. You don"t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why.
