Stan, I've been growing pumpkins for ten years and they have one heck of a root system. They will spread their roots 5-10 ft. So I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. I got mine planted last weekend and I looked to day and they are up. I put a couple of rows in ridges. This way if I have to water them the water will follow the ridge down to the end of the row.
