Ford 4500 Backhoe

HELP The shifting fork inside the bell housing that is actuated through the linkage off the steering column shuttle shift is broken. This is a '72 model Ford 4500. Has anyone any experience replacing this cold rolled steel fork? Does it require spliting the engine from the bell housing?
Is this a tough job? Anyone care to help me??? Is this the proper place to ask these things::
