Did you disconnect any of the lines? If you did, the system MUST be evacuated to remove the air from the system. Air in the system is like letting ice cubes melt in your soda or tea. It dilutes the refrigerant. Also, moisture from the air will mix with the refrigerant creating acid that will eat holes in the system. You need a set of gauges and be able to interpret them to know what's going on. Those "DIY Kits" are only for adding to the system, not for major service. How did you find your leak? Oil leakage indicates a large leak. Small leaks can only be found with a leak detector or tracer dye and a black light.
