GASSY SMELL FROM MY CAR - where's it coming from ????

OK, so I'm cheating and asking a car question on a tractor site, but this is the only place I know where I'll get a decent answer. I've got an '86 Honda Civic which I've had since new. Has about 270000 Km on it (170000 miles). Lately, it has been giving off a rather foul gassy smell odor. It's definitely gas, but a rather rotton gas smell that's hard to describe. I've checked the carb area, gas lines in the engine area, fuel filter (back by the tank), and underneath the tank. Can't see any fluid or wet spots, nor can I even seem to pinpoint any area where the smell is stronger. Somedays, it seems worse than others. I'm beginning to think I might have to park it outside this winter if it gets any worse (and up here you don't want to be parking it outside). The only good part is that I could keep one of my tractors inside. Anyways, any of you guys have any ideas where it might be coming from or where to look? Thanks.
