When we moved here 5 years ago, our back yard was FULL of sand spurs, sounds very similar in nature, 50 seeds per plant, very prolific, hurt like crazy when you step on them. Our poor dogs... Just about under control now. Have had to spray roundup on each plant, cut off the seeds if there are any. They are "smart" too... I figured out that if you just cut the grass often enough and low enough, the seeds couldn't grow. They outsmarted me, and just grew seed(burrs) lower than I was cutting. Persistance is the key, and in your case maybe some weevils.
