Mike - Something's not right. Assuming you have a good battery, ammeter reading should taper to just a couple of amps regardless of engine RPM, after the motor's been running a few minutes. Sounds like you've installed older, externally regulated Delco alternator here. (It will have two aux spade terminals in the rear arranged in parallel like this: | |; they'll be marked F and R). For this type of alternator to work properly you need a matching Delco voltage regulator wired to it. If you have a newer, internally-regulated Delco alternator (has two aux spade terminals in the back corner arranged in line: - -; terminals are marked 1 and 2), you've either got it wired wrong, or the internal regulator has failed. Whatever the problem is, best get it corrected soon as possible. Running it the way it is now will overcharge and eventually ruin the battery.
