Gentlemen, you seem to think that by putting your head in the sand that nothing will happen! Today's engines are made of many different metals unlike the older ones with cast iron blocks, plus the radiator is no longer good old copper. Fancy that!! With the newer, multi-metal engines, after a period of time (heat, cold, startup, shutdown) the antifreeze will actually turn acidic and begin to consume the inside of your engine. I have seen water pumps that have been nearly eaten up due to non-maintenance. Maybe you were lucky with your experiences. Another point, antifreeze doesn't wear out, BUT the additives do! The anti-rust agents, the anti-foam agents, waterpump lube and buffering agents will gradually be used up, then nasty things happen. IF, again I say IF you carefully monitor the coolant you may be able to go a ways further before changing your coolant. There are commercial test strips available to determine system acidity. (like the old chemistry class litmus paper) My choice is to err on the side of reliability, rather than getting stranded in traffic or in one of our famous MINNESOTA SNOW DRIFTS! PS: Belts & hoses should be replaced about every 4 years, too. If you squeeze a hose (cold engine)and it feels spongy, REPLACE IT NOW!

From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
